The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recently joined a delegation from Iceland for a courtesy visit to Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health.
The meeting centered on advancing maternal health, strengthening health systems, and improving access to quality care, with a focus on preventing obstetric fistula, a condition affecting many women in the country.
UNFPA and the Icelandic delegation highlighted the importance of partnerships and collaboration in addressing maternal health challenges, ensuring women and girls receive the care they need.
“Strengthening maternal health services is key to building resilient health systems and empowering communities,” stated a UNFPA representative.
The discussions reinforced ongoing initiatives by the Sierra Leone government, UNFPA, and international partners to reduce maternal mortality and promote safe childbirth nationwide.
