The United Kingdom’s Deputy High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Kathleen Reid, has hailed the Sherbro Island eco-city project as a “visionary” step forward, following a press conference with international actor and philanthropist Idris Elba.
The event, held at the Radisson Blu hotel, marked the formal announcement of a landmark agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and Sherbro Alliance Partners to develop a sustainable city on Sherbro Island in the Bonthe District.
Speaking after the event, Ms. Reid expressed that: “Bonthe Island is a real beauty and with this visionary eco-city project, its future shines brighter than ever.”
The Sherbro Island City project is being spearheaded by Sherbro Alliance Partners, co-founded by Idris Elba and Sierra Leonean entrepreneur Siaka Stevens. The initiative aims to build a smart, eco-friendly city powered by renewable energy and designed to promote inclusive growth, job creation, and sustainable tourism.
The project has drawn international attention and is expected to bring significant investment to Sierra Leone’s southern coastline, with plans for modern infrastructure, health and education facilities, and environmentally conscious urban development.
Elba, whose father is from Sierra Leone, has described the project as a personal mission to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
The press conference was attended by government officials, development partners, investors, and members of the diplomatic and business communities.
