Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its commitment to global peace and security after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a United States-drafted resolution on Monday aimed at securing a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza.
His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, who presided over the Council’s sitting in New York, oversaw deliberations that culminated in the adoption of the resolution seen by many as a decisive international effort to halt months of violence and ease humanitarian suffering.
In a statement following the session, Sierra Leone expressed full support for the resolution, describing it as a balanced and forward-looking framework that offers
“a comprehensive ceasefire plan to end violence and restore hope” for millions affected by the conflict.
The government highlighted two key provisions that it believes could significantly advance peace: the establishment of an International Stabilization Force for Gaza to help guarantee security on the ground, and the creation of a Board of Peace to guide transitional governance efforts.
“These mechanisms provide an important pathway toward accountability, stability, and long-term recovery.”
Sierra Leone noted, adding that the nation remains committed to working with partners to ensure the resolution’s effective implementation.
President Bio’s leadership at the session underscores Sierra Leone’s growing diplomatic profile as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2024–2025 term.
