Sierra Leone has taken a significant step forward in its fight against climate change with the launch of the Association of Carbon Conservation and Reforestation (ACCR). This new coalition aims to amplify the voice of the private sector in carbon finance, fostering collaboration among local communities, government, businesses, and international partners to accelerate conservation and sustainable development efforts.

The initiative, supported by the UK Government, brings together stakeholders to harness the opportunities offered by carbon markets, including supporting local livelihoods, reducing deforestation, lowering carbon emissions, and generating sustainable revenue streams.

"The launch of the Association of Carbon Conservation and Reforestation is a pivotal step in fostering sustainable development and climate resilience in Sierra Leone. By empowering the private sector to actively participate in carbon finance, we are not only addressing environmental challenges but also creating economic opportunities for local communities," expressed Josephine Gauld LVO, British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Emmanuel Jiwoh Abdulai, expressed that the Carbon markets represent a powerful tool for Sierra Leone’s sustainable future, and that the establishment of ACCR will ensure that the private sector and communities have a seat at the table to benefit from climate finance and drive real impact.

Chukwu-Emeka Chikezie, the Team Leader of Invest Salone, outlined that the partnership exemplifies how collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners can unlock new economic opportunities while protecting forests and communities.

The ACCR will serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, advocacy, and investment promotion, aiming to scale up Sierra Leone’s reforestation and carbon conservation initiatives with fairness and transparency.
