Mohamed Basiru Sanusi Celebrates Media Anniversary

By Alie Sonta Kamara

Mohamed Basiru Sanusi, a.k.a Ambassador Bash, is a well-known figure in the Sierra Leone media industry, with a career spanning decades marked by uncommon achievements.

Born and raised in the Fourah Bay community, Mohamed hailed from the Davies and Sanusi Family. He completed his education at the Albert Academy before furthering his studies at Njala University, BBC Media, WAIFEM, LSJ and Digital Broadcasting Training In China.

On the career front, Ambassador Bash started his media journey in 2006 as a sales-agent at Radio Democracy. He then made his way to Choice FM and later to Media One Centre, becoming a popular face on Star Television, where he dedicated seven years as a journalist. Regrettably on August 11, 2022, Mohamed faced public accusations about his relationship with President Bio and subsequent dismissal, becoming the first Sierra Leonean journalist to encounter such circumstances.

The claim was that Mr. Sanusi had a close relationship with His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio and was responsible for attacks on the Center. He refuted all allegations following a publication of his termination in a newspaper. He never received any official correspondence from the President. Undeterred by the ordeal, he ventured into entrepreneurship, founding his own media company, Iafrika SL, where he currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Founder.

Mohamed also engaged in freelance journalism for four years and is presently affiliated with Afri Radio.

Known affectionately as Ambassador Bash, Mohamed garnered international recognition as a reporter for The Guardian Newspaper in London, UK, as well as a Sierra Leonean representative for the All-Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), Correspondent For WatSup TV Ghana and various other global institutions. Additionally, he collaborated with organizations such as the Pan-African Youth Leadership Foundation and Youth Connekt Africa.

Against this backdrop of his accomplished career, Mohamed is organizing "A Night with Bash," a celebration aimed at motivating young media practitioners and inspiring his own commitment to the field. This event marks the eighteen anniversary of his media journey, following Past celebrations in 2016 at the East-End and in 2021 at Lumley Aberdeen Beach. This year's commemoration will take place at the New City Hall Building on the 14th floor on April 26, 2024. Proceeds from the event will fund the acquisition of additional media equipment for Iafrika SL and the launch of the Ambassador Bash Vlog, focusing on promoting tourism and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone and beyond.

Ambassador Bash has been a mentor and advocate for numerous aspiring media professionals, creating employment opportunities for many Sierra Leoneans and continuing to support the youths in society.
