With a ceremonial launch at Buckingham Palace, His Majesty King Charles III set in motion the first-ever King’s Baton Relay, marking the official countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Baton, carrying a message from the King to the peoples of the Commonwealth, will travel through 74 nations and territories, symbolizing unity, diversity, and the enduring spirit of the Games.
“From His Majesty the King to the Commonwealth, the Baton is officially on the move,” declared the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in a statement. “This moment connects all 74 nations and territories in a shared celebration of humanity and excellence.”

The King’s Baton Relay is a cherished tradition of the Commonwealth Games, symbolizing peace, cooperation, and the lead-up to the quadrennial sporting event. However, this edition is particularly historic, being the first to carry the title of King’s Baton Relay since the accession of King Charles III.
Over the next 12 months, the Baton will journey through Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, collecting stories and igniting excitement ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Games. Athletes, youth leaders, and everyday citizens will have the chance to carry the Baton, share their dreams, and celebrate the power of sport to unite people.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, bringing together thousands of athletes to compete in disciplines ranging from athletics and swimming to netball and wrestling.
The King's message will be read aloud at the Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, closing the relay and officially welcoming the Commonwealth family to what promises to be a spectacular Games.
