The Ministry of Planning and Economic and Development (MoPED) has suspended Twenty-Five Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are considered as non-compliant with the established requirements to operate as an NGO.
In a press statement dated 19 March 2024, the Ministry explained that after a comprehensive review of the operational landscape, it discovered that certain NGOs are operating without meeting the requisite standards outlined by their NGO policy framework key amongst is to have an identifiable office in Sierra Leone.
The release further outlined the mandate of the Ministry “as custodians of public trust and resources, it is imperative that NGOs adhere to the prescribed requirements to fulfill their mission effectively while ensuring that resources are judiciously used” the release stated
The release concluded that the Ministry’s action is not intended to impede the invaluable contributions made by NGOs in various spheres of societal development rather, it is a protective step towards enhancing the integrity of the NGO sector.
