United Nations agencies operating in Sierra Leone are joining forces to develop and implement innovative strategies that move beyond short-term projects, aiming instead for lasting, systemic change aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In what is being described as a landmark shift, the UN is focusing on upstream policy dialogue and long-term planning to create a unified, transformative impact across sectors such as health, education, climate, and economic resilience.
The approach signals a move away from fragmented, isolated development efforts towards a coordinated framework that prioritizes sustainability and national ownership.
“At the heart of this approach is our shared goal: to drive strategic dialogue with government and stakeholders that leads to enduring results,” said [Insert Name], [Insert Title, e.g., UN Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone]. “We are not just funding projects; we are shaping systems that empower communities and institutions for the long term.”

This new strategy comes as Sierra Leone faces the compounded effects of post-pandemic recovery, economic instability, and climate challenges. By aligning resources and expertise, UN agencies hope to bolster the government’s capacity to implement evidence-based policies that benefit all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
The initiative is part of a broader global shift driven by UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ reform agenda, which calls for more coherent, collaborative, and accountable action among UN entities.
Officials say the new model has the potential to be replicated in other countries, serving as a blueprint for effective, sustainable development.
As implementation progresses, stakeholders remain optimistic that this unified effort will accelerate Sierra Leone’s journey toward achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
