U.S. Embassy Hosts Inaugural College Fair at Freetown City Hall

The U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone hosted its first-ever College Fair on Wednesday at City Hall, drawing hundreds of enthusiastic students eager to explore educational opportunities in the United States.

The event featured over 15 booths representing a diverse range of U.S. colleges and universities, from small liberal arts colleges to major research institutions. Freetown students engaged directly with representatives, asking questions about application procedures, scholarship opportunities, and how to choose institutions that align with their academic goals and personal interests.

U.S. Ambassador Bryan Hunt addressed the gathering, encouraging students to be thoughtful and ambitious in planning their futures.

“I wish you the best of luck as you research your education options,” Ambassador Hunt said. “I hope it is a small step forward towards a future where young people like you drive growth, promote stability, and create opportunities that elevate others. The United States is ready to partner with Sierra Leone to shape that future.”

The Ambassador also urged students who pursue studies in the United States to return home after completing their education, emphasizing the importance of giving back to their communities and contributing to Sierra Leone’s development.

Deputy Minister of Education Emily Gogra delivered brief remarks, commending the initiative for helping bridge the gap between Sierra Leonean students and global education pathways. The event was graciously hosted by Freetown Mayor Yvonne Denise Aki-Sawyerr, who welcomed attendees and expressed her support for youth education and empowerment.

The U.S. Embassy extended its gratitude to all participating schools, teachers, and students for making the event a success.
