In a show of continued support for Sierra Leone’s economic development, United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan David Hunt, visited Karene District this week to strengthen ties and promote private-sector growth and agricultural innovation opportunities.

The visit, which included meetings with traditional leaders, local government officials, and community stakeholders, underscored the U.S. government’s long-standing commitment to partnerships that drive inclusive, community-led development. Ambassador Hunt emphasized the need for policies and infrastructure that support entrepreneurship and enable sustainable growth in rural districts like Karene.

“The United States remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone in building a strong, resilient economy that works for everyone,” Ambassador Hunt said. “We believe in the power of local leadership, grassroots partnerships, and the private sector to drive transformative change.”

Promoting Private Sector-Led Growth

A central theme of the Ambassador’s remarks was the importance of creating a conducive environment for private investment. With agriculture as the backbone of the Karene economy, Ambassador Hunt highlighted the sector's innovation potential and improved value chains to boost livelihoods and reduce poverty.

He pointed to the U.S. government’s initiatives through USAID and other development programs that aim to equip local farmers with the tools, training, and technology needed to enhance productivity and access markets.

“Investing in agriculture not only feeds communities but also creates jobs and fosters economic independence,” Hunt noted. “We are committed to working with Sierra Leone to unlock the full potential of this vital sector.”

Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

Ambassador Hunt’s visit also served as a reaffirmation of the United States’ broader commercial and diplomatic engagement with Sierra Leone. Trade and investment between the two nations have steadily increased in recent years, with new opportunities emerging in areas such as agribusiness, energy, and infrastructure.

Local leaders welcomed the visit as a sign of growing cooperation and international confidence in Sierra Leone’s development path.

“Ambassador Hunt’s presence here is deeply appreciated,” said Chief [Name], a traditional leader in Karene. “It shows that our voices are being heard and that we have a partner in the United States as we work to improve the lives of our people.”

A Warm Welcome in Karene

The Ambassador expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Karene for their warm reception and open dialogue. He described the district’s hospitality and engagement as a testament to the strong bonds of friendship between the United States and Sierra Leone.

“This visit has been inspiring. The people of Karene are passionate, resilient, and full of ideas for the future,” said Ambassador Hunt. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration to help bring those ideas to life.”

Looking Ahead

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has reiterated its commitment to working with both government and civil society actors to promote democratic governance, economic empowerment, and human development across all regions of Sierra Leone.

As Ambassador Hunt concluded his tour of Karene, he emphasized that sustainable

development must be locally driven and internationally supported—a principle that will continue to guide U.S. engagement across the country
