Faith-based organization distances itself from weekend crash that disrupted power supply.
Caritas Freetown has issued a public clarification distancing itself from a vehicular incident over the weekend that caused property damage and a power outage in a Freetown community.
In a statement shared via Facebook, the organization stressed that Caritas Freetown and Caritas Sierra Leone National are two separate entities, each with its leadership and operations. The move comes amid confusion following a crash involving a vehicle marked with the Caritas logo.
According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle lost control, damaged private property, and disrupted the electricity connection in the area. The incident has drawn concern from residents, many of whom are still without power.
Caritas Freetown has expressed sympathy to those affected and is calling for calm as efforts to resolve the situation continue.
“We understand the distress caused by the resulting property damage and disruption of electricity in your community,” the organization stated.
While acknowledging the public’s frustration, Caritas Freetown clarified that it was not responsible for the driver involved, noting that the vehicle and personnel are under the authority of Caritas National. The statement added that Caritas Freetown has formally alerted the national body and its board, urging them to take responsibility for addressing the damages.
“While we share in your frustration and disappointment, we respectfully ask that neither Caritas
Freetown nor our sister organization, Caritas National, be judged solely based on this isolated incident,” the release continued.
Caritas Freetown concluded by reaffirming its commitment to the people of Sierra Leone, citing the Caritas network’s longstanding reputation for integrity and timely intervention in times of need.
